About Dactelo

A public service mission: make the words in Arabic documents easier to find and use.

Why Dactelo exists

Documents can be preserved as images while their contents remain difficult to find. We work on the step between an image and usable text, with Arabic handwriting as the first focus.

Part of a wider digitization mission

Printed text recognition (OCR) and handwritten text recognition (HTR) address different reading tasks within digitization. Dactelo starts with HTR for legal documents and can support specialist campaigns as their material and review process are ready.

Who runs it

Dactelo is built by Taktek. Volunteers contribute readings; expert reviewers decide which readings can become accepted training or evaluation examples. It is not a legal advice service.

Public benefit, careful access

A public service does not make every source image or dataset public. Access, release and reuse depend on each campaign’s recorded rights and terms. No public model release or measured accuracy is claimed here.
